This year I plan to focus on Mokuhanga woodblocks in preparation for The 2012 International Mokuhanga Conference in Nara, Japan. I will be speaking on Buddha Woodblocks historically and in contemporary work. My goal is to revive the carving and printing of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. It is a dying art and currently is mostly practiced in the form of prayer flags.

Mokuhanga is an old-school, labor-intensive and low-tech Printmaking practice. We hand carve the woodblocks, usually a different block for each color. Next the woodblock is hand rubbed onto mulberry paper using a bamboo baren. The inks used are watercolor inks and sumi making this a non toxic practice. The technique does not require expensive printing presses and toxic oil based inks.
