NEW WORK 2021
This was my first Ganesha woodblock from 2014. A different woodblock is carved for each color, 5 color blocks and the key block (outline). My skill has improved a lot since I started carving woodblocks. I wanted to revisit these early blocks especially this charming Ganesha. I re carved the blocks and did a fresh printing.
Ganesha is the most beloved Hindu deity. He is the known as the remover of obstacles. He is invoked at the beginning of new adventures. He is found everywhere in India from schoolyards to temples.
Mokuhanga is the traditional Japanese style of woodblock prints. A separate block is hand carved for each color used. The blocks are printed onto Japanese Kozo or mulberry paper by hand rubbing with a barren. The inks used are sumi and watercolor inks. Mokuhanga is a labor-intensive, non-toxic, low-tech old school printmaking practice.
