New Work 2023
I love Mynah birds and the way they strut all around Hawaii. I carved 3 blocks combining this mynah with ulu (Hawaiian Breadfruit). I layered the blocks using bokashi or a gradation of color. I hand carved and hand rubbed this artwork using a baren.
Mokuhanga is the traditional Japanese style of woodblock prints. A separate block is hand carved for each color used. The blocks are printed onto Japanese Kozo or mulberry paper by hand rubbing with a barren. The inks used are sumie and watercolor inks. Moku hanga is a labor-intensive old school printmaking practice.
