New Work 2019
Uma Tara is part of my everyday goddess series. I am exploring the idea from yoga philosophy that every woman is the goddess and every man Shiva or that each of us has Buddha nature. I'm particularly interested in showing ethnic diversity in my everyday goddesses. My model for this goddess is Peruvian, a Latina goddess.
I carved this mokuhanga woodblock while in Art residency in Japan and chose a Japanese dragon as her guardian. Mokuhanga is the traditional Japanese style of woodblock prints. The block is printed onto Japanese Kozo or mulberry paper by hand rubbing with a barren. The inks used are sumi and watercolor inks. Mokuhanga is a labor-intensive old school printmaking practice. Typically a separate block is carved for each color. This artworks has 5 carved woodblocks.
Tara is the goddess of wisdom and compassion. Tara or Arya Tara, also known as Jetsun Dolma, is a female Bodhisattva . She is the "mother of liberation", and represents the virtues of success in work and achievements. She is invoked for long-life. She is the kind mother goddess always available to help practitioners.
