Mynah and Ulu
Mokuhanga Woodblocks and inks on mulberry paper
11x14
2021

I love Mynah birds and the way they strut all around Hawaii. I combined this mynah with the clouds. I layered the two blocks using bokashi or a gradation of color. I hand carved and hand rubbed this artwork using a baren.

Mokuhanga is the traditional Japanese style of woodblock prints. A separate block is hand carved for each color used. The blocks are printed onto Japanese Kozo or mulberry paper by hand rubbing with a barren. The inks used are sumi and watercolor inks. Mokuhanga is a labor-intensive old school printmaking practice.
